Artists in Gwangju and Jeonnam Protest Against War at May 18 Plaza

Artists from Gwangju and Jeonnam held a protest calling for an end to the war in Iran, showcasing various anti-war artworks during a march.

On October 10, artists from Gwangju and Jeonnam participated in a protest at the May 18 Democracy Plaza, calling for an end to the Iranian war. Organized by the Life and Peace Art Action group, the event featured a banner march focused on themes of life, the environment, and peace. About ten artists, including Hong Seong-dam, Joo Hong, Jeon Jeong-ho, and others, displayed their artwork depicting the horrors of war, such as a woman crying amidst falling bombs while holding a child. Among the varied artworks, one piece by artist Han Hee-won depicted a green banner with the message 'May life and peace come,' capturing the essence of the protest’s anti-war sentiment. Other provocative representations included an armed Statue of Liberty, a globe being heated on a frying pan by former U.S. President Donald Trump, and bloodied bags with white chrysanthemums, symbolizing violence and loss. The protesters also carried banners with messages like 'Lord, grant us peace. War is madness' and 'If Trump messes around, he will die,' showcasing a unified call against war. The Life and Peace Art Action group emphasized that while bombings target territories, the real casualties are innocent civilians, particularly children, women, and the elderly. They reiterated a stance of viewing neither Iran nor the U.S. or Israel as the enemy, but rather, they see 'war itself' as the true adversary they are fighting against.
