Russian Supreme Court Rejects Ex-Domodedovo Owner’s Appeal to Overturn State Seizure of Airport

Russia's Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal from a former owner of Domodedovo International Airport, solidifying the state ownership after a prior arbitration ruling.

The Russian Supreme Court has decided to reject an appeal by Dmitry Kamenshchik, one of the former owners of Domodedovo International Airport, thereby confirming the Russian government's control over the facility. This decision follows a ruling made by an arbitration court last June that deemed Kamenshchik and his co-owner Valery Kogan foreign residents, which justified the transfer of ownership to the state. The judicial chamber's dismissal of Kamenshchik's claim reinforces the lower court's decisions regarding the nationalization process.

In January, Domodedovo Airport was sold at an auction to Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport for over 66 billion rubles, with the latter being managed by a company associated with Arkady Rotenberg, a known ally of President Putin. The Supreme Court has previously estimated the assets of Domodedovo to be worth in excess of 1 trillion rubles, indicating the significant value of the airport in the Russian aviation market and the broader economy.

This nationalization process and subsequent court decisions reflect Russia's increasing regulation and control over major infrastructure and assets, particularly within strategic sectors like aviation. The ruling and the transition of ownership might also highlight the government's ongoing efforts to consolidate power and influence over key economic resources amidst a backdrop of international sanctions and geopolitical pressures.
