Thessaloniki: 9 migrants were found in the attic of a barbershop

Nine Afghan migrants lacking legal residency documents were discovered in the attic of a Thessaloniki barbershop during a police operation targeting human trafficking.

During a police operation aimed at combating human trafficking in Thessaloniki, nine Afghan migrants were found in the attic of a barbershop in the city's center. All nine individuals lacked legal documentation for their residency in Greece. The operation, carried out by the Migration Management Department of the Thessaloniki Foreigners Directorate, revealed serious concerns about the conditions under which these migrants were kept within the city.

Four individuals were arrested in connection with the incident, including the shop owner. The police reported that among those detained was an 18-year-old Syrian who allegedly was responsible for guarding the nine migrants. Furthermore, a 26-year-old compatriot of the Syrian was apprehended as the person in charge of the business, while the owner, a 27-year-old Lebanese woman, was also arrested. The investigation indicated that the migrants had been transported earlier that day from the Evros region in a van, exposing the trafficking networks operating in the area.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Greece as a transit point for migrants attempting to reach other parts of Europe. The findings raise critical implications for the local government's response to migration and human trafficking. As authorities strive to address these issues, the safety and legal status of migrants remain precarious, revealing the complexities of migration policies in the region.
