Attempts to tarnish India's image during war, Pakistan is spreading falsehoods using AI and edited videos
India is facing a surge of online disinformation campaigns, spearheaded by Pakistan, amidst rising tensions in the Middle East.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, India is grappling with large-scale online disinformation campaigns, notably involving edited and AI-generated videos aimed at undermining its image. A recent incident highlighted this issue when a digitally altered video featuring External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar went viral, falsely claiming that India would not tolerate Muslim countries troubling Israel and that Israel allegedly provided $3 billion to the Taliban on India's behalf. This fabricated narrative exemplifies the aggressive misinformation efforts attributed to social media operators in Pakistan.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-check unit swiftly debunked the false video, confirming it as an AI-generated 'deepfake' and clarifying that the minister had not made such statements. The pervasive influence of disinformation has been significant, with government figures revealing a troubling trend over the past four years. Since 2019, PIB's fact-checking team has uncovered over 2,400 instances of fake news, with more than 800 fraudulent stories detected in just the last year alone.
This ongoing campaign of misinformation highlights the challenges Indian authorities face in combatting fake news, particularly during critical geopolitical events. As social media becomes an increasingly powerful tool for manipulation, the Indian government emphasizes the need for vigilance and active measures to counteract these narratives that could affect public perception and international relations.
