India invokes special act to ensure gas supplies
India has activated the Essential Commodities Act to secure gas supplies amid disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In response to significant disruptions in gas supplies due to the Middle East conflict, India has invoked the Essential Commodities Act (ECA) to ensure adequate supplies of cooking gas for its 1.4 billion citizens. This legislation allows the government to intervene in the market to prevent unreasonable price increases and artificial shortages, thereby regulating the production, storage, and transportation of essential commodities.
The backdrop of this decision stems from heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly due to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and its subsequent retaliation, which have led to a substantial reduction in shipping activities through critical routes like the Strait of Hormuz. As India relies heavily on imports for its energy needs—85% of its oil and nearly half of its natural gas comes from foreign sources—the government is taking decisive action to mitigate the risks associated with these geopolitical tensions.
The immediate effects of this crisis have begun to surface, with reports from Bengaluru indicating that a local hotel had to limit its menu to coffee and tea due to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. Such instances highlight the potential urgency and impact of gas supply variability on everyday life in India, compelling the government to act swiftly to stabilize the market and protect consumers.
