I. Ruginienė on the starting Seimas session: strengthening defense remains the top priority

During the opening session of the Lithuanian parliament, Minister I. Ruginienė emphasized that strengthening national defense continues to be a crucial priority for the government.

In her speech during the parliamentary opening, Minister of National Defense I. Ruginienė outlined the significant role of national security in Lithuania's government agenda. She highlighted that the upcoming legislative session will focus on crucial law proposals necessary for the readiness to accept a German brigade in Lithuania, and for enhancing military infrastructure through various projects in Kapčiamiesčio, Tauragės, and Šilalės. These initiatives aim not only at bolstering military capabilities but also at improving civil safety and crisis management in the country.

Ruginienė communicated that the Government has proposed a package of 117 legislative proposals to ensure people's safety in social, economic, and national security aspects, which is particularly timely in light of regional security concerns. She also referenced the approval of a new National Security Strategy by the Government, which will be presented to the parliament. This strategy details commitments made by the State Defense Council to allocate a minimum of 5-6% of Lithuania's GDP for national defense by 2030, laying a robust financial foundation for modernizing military capabilities.

The statements from Minister Ruginienė reflect Lithuania's proactive stance on national security as it navigates a complex geopolitical landscape. The government's commitment to increased defense spending underscores the urgency and seriousness with which Lithuania is approaching its defense commitments, especially with the looming threats in the region, enhancing both public confidence in governance as well as international credibility.
