Itochu Consolidates IP Business, Streamlining Production and Merchandise Development

Itochu has announced the establishment of a subsidiary that consolidates its intellectual property (IP) business, focusing on anime production and merchandise development.

On October 10, Itochu Corporation announced the establishment of a new subsidiary to consolidate its intellectual property (IP) business, which includes anime and character-related ventures. This move aims to enhance operational efficiency and expand its presence in the IP business sector. With the growing significance of IP in the entertainment industry, Itochu's strategy is to create a more cohesive structure for managing these assets effectively.

The newly formed subsidiary, 'Iryetsu Port', will oversee the transfer of assets from Itochu's existing anime production company, 'Sky PerfecTV Pictures', and its character licensing operations. This restructuring enables Itochu to increase its stake in Sky PerfecTV Pictures from 17% to 49%, signifying a more substantial commitment to anime production. The consolidation will facilitate smoother operations across the entire spectrum from anime creation to merchandise sales and international expansion, positioning Itochu to better compete in the global IP market.

This strategic move is reflective of a broader trend in Japan's IP business, where companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of a unified approach to managing and monetizing intellectual property. As the demand for anime and related products continues to rise, Itochu's consolidation is likely to strengthen its competitive edge and allow for more innovative ventures in the entertainment sector.
