The Ministry of Culture canceled training on integration for journalists
The Estonian Ministry of Culture has canceled a training program aimed at enhancing journalists' skills in addressing integration and migration issues, which was set to cost 315,000 euros.
The Estonian Ministry of Culture, under the direction of Minister Heidy Purga from the Reform Party, has announced the cancellation of a government tender for training intended to improve media workers' abilities to cover topics related to integration and migration. This training program would have incurred an expense of 315,000 euros for the ministry. However, Purga indicated that sometimes it is necessary to take a step back in order to move forward more effectively in the future.
During a question-and-answer session in the Riigikogu, Purga confirmed that the tender, officially titled "Training Program for Local Media Employees," is now nullified. She noted that there is a dispute period in effect regarding the decision to annul the tender, which will last until March 13. This pause allows for a reassessment of the training initiative and consultation with various stakeholders, particularly academic institutions like the University of Tartu, which was to be involved in the training process as a partner.
The implications of this cancellation extend beyond just the financial aspect, as it raises questions about how the government intends to handle integration and migration narrative in the media going forward. There is a clear recognition of the need for improved training for journalists in these critical areas, but the pause in this program suggests that the ministry is reconsidering its approach and possibly looking for alternative means to achieve the training goals. The decision reflects a cautious and strategic move by the ministry amidst ongoing discussions about media coverage of sensitive societal issues in Estonia.
