Budget Passed in House of Representatives on the 13th, National Democratic Party's Hajiba Says 'Cooperation is Difficult' After Meeting with the LDP
The budget passed in the House of Representatives on the 13th, but National Democratic Party leader Hajiba expressed difficulties in cooperation after meeting with the LDP's Secretary General.
On October 10th, Toshiaki Suzuki, Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), met with Katsuya Hajiba, Secretary General of the National Democratic Party, to discuss cooperation on the new fiscal year budget proposal set to be passed within the current year. During this meeting, Hajiba emphasized the importance of thorough budget deliberations and the preparation of a provisional budget, suggesting that he would not cooperate with the LDP’s goal to pass the initial budget proposal in the House on the 13th.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is also the president of the LDP, has expressed a strong desire to achieve passage of the budget within the fiscal year, prompting the ruling coalition to push for a reduction in deliberation time. The LDP aims to wrap up questioning on the 13th and hopes to move the budget proposal through the House that same day. However, opposition parties have protested this expedited schedule, arguing that it undermines adequate deliberation. Hajiba reiterated to reporters after the meeting that cooperation seems challenging under the current conditions.
While the ruling coalition holds a significant majority in the House of Representatives, the situation in the House of Councillors is more complicated, with opposition parties holding the majority. Therefore, even if the budget passes in the House on the 13th, without cooperation from the opposition in the Councillors, the discussions could become stalled, significantly raising the hurdles for passing the budget within the fiscal year. Despite Suzuki’s assertion of significant compatibility between the parties, the path forward appears contentious and fraught with political disagreements.
