Body of 64-Year-Old Woman Found in Shiga Mountains, 22-Year-Old Syrian Man Re-arrested on Murder Charges
A 22-year-old Syrian man has been re-arrested for the murder of a 64-year-old woman whose body was discovered in the mountains of Shiga Prefecture.
On April 10, Japanese police in Shiga and Gifu Prefectures announced the re-arrest of a 22-year-old Syrian man, Mohamed Hamoud, on murder charges. This follows an incident where the body of a 64-year-old woman, who worked as a staff member at an educational facility in Tarui Town, was found on April 2 of the previous year in a forest area near Maibara City. The victim, Mayumi Kiriyama, was discovered face down on a futon, leading to an investigation that implicated Hamoud.
The police allege that the suspect fatally attacked Kiriyama in her garage on March 14, stabbing her multiple times in the neck and subsequently strangling her. Following the murder, it is believed that Hamoud transported her body from her home to the forested area where it was abandoned. Previously, he had been arrested on February 18 for body abandonment, and forensic results indicated that the cause of death was suffocation due to neck compression.
Hamoud, who arrived in Japan in June 2024 and was working as a temporary employee at the time of the incident, was captured through surveillance footage, which showed him alone transporting the body in a vehicle. This case raises concerns over public safety and the circumstances surrounding foreign nationals in Japan, especially concerning crime and violence, highlighting a troubling intersection of local incidents and international implications.
