LRT journalists: proposed legislative amendments may harm the broadcaster's independence

LRT journalists are concerned that proposed legal amendments could undermine the independence of Lithuania's public broadcaster.

On Tuesday, LRT journalists released a statement criticizing new legislative amendments proposed for consideration, which, according to the Seimas Law Department's assessment, contradict European media freedom laws and do not reflect the recommendations of the State Audit Office. They emphasize that the editorial policy should be determined by the editorial staff themselves rather than being handed over to the LRT Council, proposing that such principles are approved in a general meeting of all LRT employees.

The statement outlines that journalists believe the independence of the editorial department is crucial to maintain an unbiased media environment, free from external influences, whether from the Council or the administration. Moreover, they argue that the proposed journalists' ethics code should require endorsement from all LRT personnel to safeguard ethical standards across the organization.

Lastly, the journalists highlight a suggested restriction on staff from other media outlets contributing to LRT content, indicating that this could inhibit collaborative investigative efforts both in Lithuania and internationally. The proposed prohibition lacks clarity and detail, potentially jeopardizing journalistic investigations that could benefit from cross-media collaboration.
