International Maritime Union in Greece welcomes new EU Ports Strategy
The International Maritime Union in Greece expresses support for the new EU Ports Strategy aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of European ports.
The International Maritime Union in Greece has expressed its approval of the new EU Ports Strategy introduced by the European Commission. This strategy is designed to bolster the competitiveness, safety, resilience, and sustainability of ports across Europe. As these ports face numerous challenges, including heightened international competition and geopolitical tensions, the initiative underscores the critical role that ports play in facilitating trade and maintaining economic stability within the European Union.
European ports are estimated to handle around 74% of the EU's external trade and are significant drivers of economic activity, dealing with over 3.4 billion tonnes of cargo annually and supporting almost 395 million passengers. The new EU Ports Strategy is timely, especially as ports transition into multifunctional logistics and energy hubs. The strategy encourages ports to adapt by investing in digitalization and modernization to better meet the demands of a rapidly changing global market.
This initiative not only seeks to reinforce the operational capacity of the ports but also enhances their role as critical infrastructure in securing Europe's economic future. Given that ports contribute to over 423,000 direct jobs, the implications of this strategy will be significant, potentially resulting in job creation and improved job security as the industry adapts to new technological and regulatory environments.
