In Härjedalen, the most reindeer accidents occur in the county – reindeer herders want speed limit reduction
Reindeer herders in Härjedalen are advocating for reduced speed limits on roads due to a high number of reindeer accidents, particularly on two specific roads.
In Härjedalen, a region in Sweden, local reindeer herders from the Handölsdalen Sameby are raising alarm over the growing number of road accidents involving reindeer. During the winter months, the herders manage substantial reindeer populations grazing in the forests between Riksväg 84 and Länsväg Z 514, with statistics showing a significant increase in accidents. In January and February of this year alone, there were 136 reported incidents, primarily occurring in January. Arne Omma, the chairman of the Handölsdalen Sameby, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the nature of reindeer roaming and the existing speed limits make accidents almost unavoidable.
