BYD is losing momentum in China. The electric vehicle market is slowing down, and Geely is overtaking the leader

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is experiencing a significant downturn in sales, losing ground to competitors like Geely.

BYD, the Chinese powerhouse in electric mobility, has seen a notable slowdown in sales recently, marking a shift from its previous rapid growth trajectory. In the first two months of 2026, BYD sold 400,241 vehicles in China, which reflects a striking 36% decrease compared to the same period last year. February, in particular, was a challenging month with sales dropping to 190,000 vehicles - a drop of 9.5% from January and a staggering 41% decrease year-on-year. While the Chinese New Year festivities typically reduce purchasing activity, analysts suggest that other underlying factors may be contributing to this decline.
