Tokyo University General Entrance Exam Pass Rate for Women at 20.3%, Slight Increase from Last Year

Tokyo University reports that the percentage of women among general entrance exam passers is 20.3%, a slight increase from last year's 20.0%.

Tokyo University released its entrance exam results for the 2026 academic year, revealing that women constitute 20.3% of the successful candidates in the general entrance examination, a slight increase from 20.0% last year. Female applicants accounted for 23.0%, showing a minor decline compared to the previous year's figure of 23.3%. Overall, when including various selection processes such as school recommendation admissions, the female pass rate stood at 21.4%, nearly unchanged from 21.3% last year.

The percentage of women among general entrance exam entrants at Tokyo University first reached 20% in the 2021 academic year. Since then, this percentage has fluctuated around the 20% mark without significant growth, indicating a stagnation in the increase of female representation among successful candidates in this category. Though the general entrance exam pass rate for women has seen a marginal rise, it still raises questions about the factors impacting women's participation and success in rigorous academic settings.

In the more selective school recommendation admissions, the success rate for women dropped to 45.2%, a decrease from 49.4% the previous year. These figures suggest that while there are slight improvements in overall female representation, there are still challenges and barriers that need to be addressed to enhance gender equity within prestigious educational institutions in Japan, making it imperative for ongoing discussions around these educational disparities.
