31% of Nigerian women face physical violence – Report

A report reveals that 31% of Nigerian women experience physical violence, prompting calls for better protections and policies from the government.

A recent report by Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) highlights that 31% of Nigerian women face physical violence, underscoring the urgent need for stronger protections and inclusive policies to safeguard their well-being. This statement coincides with the observance of International Women’s Day 2026, focusing on the pressing challenges that women face in Nigeria within the context of traditional gender roles and societal expectations.

Robert Egbe, CAPPA’s Media and Communications Officer, emphasized that the theme 'Give to Gain' echoes the reality of women's contributions to economic stability and family sustenance amidst increasing adversities. Women in Nigeria perform significant roles in managing household resources, providing care, and maintaining family well-being, yet they continue to be marginalized when it comes to accessing essential services and protections required for leading dignified lives.

The report's findings reveal a disturbing trend, illustrating that despite women’s critical role in society, many still lack access to basic rights, including safe water and sanitation. As CAPPA calls for government action, there is an increased recognition that addressing these issues is essential not only for women’s rights but also for the improved overall economic and social welfare of Nigerian society as a whole.
