Lighting that makes the starry sky look vivid, an invented depiction - Prize-winning work from the Future Science Dream Painting Exhibition

A student from Tokyo won the Minister of Education Award at the 48th Future Science Dream Painting Exhibition for his innovative lighting design that enhances visibility of the night sky by negating street lights.

The 48th Future Science Dream Painting Exhibition, aimed at encouraging children to visualize dream scientific technologies, recently concluded its judging with 207 selected works out of 7,378 submissions. The prestigious Minister of Education Award was awarded to Sōsuke Kawauchi, a third grader from Jōtō Elementary School in Tokyo, for his creation called "Lighting that Makes the Night Sky Beautiful." This innovative lighting design uses technology to cancel out urban lights, allowing the stars to shine vividly. The design is influenced by the iconic wave depictions of Hokusai, showcasing creativity and originality, as praised by the judges. In addition to the Minister of Education Award, other notable prizes included the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award won by Shōko Inada from Noda Junior High School in Kanazawa for her "Photosynthesis Asphalt" concept, and the Asahi Shimbun Award for Ryōto Sakagami from Yamamoto Elementary School in Kagawa for his "Eel-inspired Wetsuit." The award ceremony is set for March 26 at the Science and Technology Museum in Kitanomaru Park, Tokyo, where an exhibition of these remarkable inventions will be held from March 27 to 29. The exhibition celebrates creativity in science and technology among young minds, allowing them to present their proactive ideas which might one day materialize into real-world innovations. The event serves not only as a recognition of talent but also as a platform for children to express their interpretations of science. Special awards were granted across various categories, emphasizing the importance of nurturing innovation from an early age in Japan's educational system.
