Amnesty asks FG to probe Rivers gas leak

Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian government to investigate gas leaks in Rivers State that threaten local residents' health and safety.

Amnesty International has called for an urgent investigation by the Nigerian Federal Government into a series of hazardous gas leaks occurring in the Bille community of Rivers State. The human rights organization has raised alarms over the potential health hazards posed to local residents as these suspected methane leaks have been found to contaminate local drinking water sources, further endangering the well-being of the community that is already vulnerable given its geographic and economic context in the oil-producing Niger Delta region.

The issue came to light when local fishermen reported unusual bubbling in the waters while working in a mangrove swamp and near a river in October 2025. This alarming phenomenon, marked by a repulsive sulphurous smell, was observed several kilometers away from Bille. What exacerbates the situation is that the bubbling water has been linked to reports of ignitable air around the leaking sites, indicating the presence of flammable gas in a community already grappling with the consequences of oil exploitation.

Amnesty International has emphasized the need for immediate action from the government to ensure that the health and safety of the Bille community are protected. This call to action is particularly significant considering the long legacy of environmental degradation and health crises linked to the oil industry in the Niger Delta. The investigation into this matter is critical for both environmental justice and the safeguarding of local livelihoods dependent on natural resources in the region.
