TikTok gets green light to stay in Canada following Carney’s China trip

Canada has allowed TikTok to continue operating in the country after securing new commitments on security from the social media platform.

Canada's Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced that TikTok Technology Canada Inc. will be permitted to resume operations in the country under new legally binding security commitments. This decision follows a significant shift from an earlier government order, issued in November 2024, which had directed the company to wind down its Canadian operations due to national security concerns. The policy reversal comes shortly after Mark Carney's visit to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping to negotiate a deal easing tariffs between the two nations.

Previously, the Canadian government had expressed mounting concerns about TikTok's data security, especially given its ownership by ByteDance Ltd., based in China. The original order intended to close TikTok's offices in Toronto and Vancouver, but it was put on hold following a legal motion from the government. The new agreement represents a compromise aimed at addressing security fears while enabling TikTok's operations to continue, emphasizing Canada's willingness to engage in negotiations with international technology firms.

This development highlights the delicate balance Canada is attempting to achieve between maintaining national security and leveraging economic and diplomatic relationships with China. The agreement comes amidst ongoing global scrutiny of TikTok and its data privacy practices, thus patching over potential risks while underscoring the complexities tied to international digital engagement and trade relations.
