Hike at the pumps has Calgarians squeezing less into the fuel tanks
Calgarians are feeling the pinch from rising fuel costs, which is affecting local nonprofits like Calgary Meals on Wheels and their ability to deliver services.
Recent hikes in gas prices have hit Calgarians hard, particularly affecting local nonprofits that rely on delivery services. Calgary Meals on Wheels, which delivers around 5,000 meals daily, has expressed concern that the soaring fuel costs, currently around $1.50 per litre, will have both direct and indirect financial impacts on their operations. The organization, which runs a fleet of 13 vehicles and relies on a network of 450 volunteer drivers, is particularly vulnerable since increased fuel prices also mean increased costs for the groceries that they rely on to prepare meals.
Christine Hentschel from Calgary Meals on Wheels emphasized that their operations serve over one million meals annually through partnerships with schools and community programs. The organization is worried that the current fuel price situation will significantly strain its budget, as transportation costs directly affect their service delivery. When fuel prices rise, it not only makes filling up their vehicles more expensive but also impacts their grocery budgeting, which is a substantial portion of their total expenses.
The increase in gas prices isn't just a concern for larger organizations; it trickles down to the volunteers who use their own vehicles to assist with meal deliveries. Hentschel highlighted that every increase in gas prices for the nonprofit corresponds to increased costs for the volunteers, creating a ripple effect that can jeopardize the continuity of essential services within the community. As fuel prices continue to fluctuate, the sustainability of these crucial nonprofit services could be at risk unless alternatives or support mechanisms are identified.
