Suspect of suffocating a woman pretended to be the victim and sent a message to her daughter: 'good morning, flower of the day'

A man is accused of murdering his partner by suffocation and attempted to cover up the crime by impersonating her in messages sent to her daughter.

Edson Campos Delgado has been arrested for the alleged murder of Leise Aparecida Cruz, who was suffocated in her home in Anastácio, Mato Grosso do Sul. After committing the crime, Delgado sent messages to Leise's daughter, Leisiane Cruz Vieira, pretending to be her mother. He initiated the deception with a typical morning greeting that Leise would send every day. The cover-up was aimed at convincing the daughter that her mother was fine despite the reality of the situation.

On June 6, Leisiane noted the unusual behavior of receiving a message that echoed her mother's routine. In the morning at 8:30 AM, Leisiane received a message from Delgado, disguised as her mother, stating, "good morning, flower of the day," which matched the usual communication pattern. However, as the day progressed, the messages changed in tone. Later in the evening, Delgado sent an audio message to Leisiane claiming Leise was unwell and that he had contacted emergency services, further compounding the deception.

Leise's tragic death marks her as the sixth victim of femicide in 2026 in the region, emphasizing the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in Brazil. The details surrounding this case not only bring to light the personal tragedy of one family but also reflect broader societal concerns about women's safety, the prevalence of domestic violence, and the responses needed from both law enforcement and social services to address such heinous crimes effectively.
