Detection of superbug in 7 patients temporarily closes ICU of Mário Gatti in Campinas
The ICU of Dr. Mário Gatti Hospital in Campinas, Brazil, has been temporarily closed after seven patients were found to be infected with a multi-drug resistant bacterium known as KPC.
The Dr. Mário Gatti Hospital in Campinas, São Paulo, has closed its Adult ICU temporarily following the discovery of seven patients infected with the multi-drug resistant bacterium KPC. This bacterium is known for its resistance to various antibiotics and poses a significant risk in high-complexity hospital environments. The closure will prevent new patients from being admitted to the ICU, effective immediately as of Tuesday, October 10, until the situation is resolved.
The detection of KPC was made during routine monitoring conducted by healthcare teams and the Hospital Infection Control Committee. Municipal authorities have confirmed the presence of this concerning bacterium and are taking necessary precautions to protect other patients and staff. As a result of the ICU's closure, patients requiring intensive care will be redirected to Hospital Ouro Verde or other nearby facilities via the municipal regulation center.
The local health authorities are implementing contingency measures in response to this outbreak. Both the municipal regulation center and the emergency medical services (Samu) have been instructed not to send any new patients to Dr. Mário Gatti Hospital until the restrictions are lifted, thereby ensuring that resources and attention can be devoted to managing and treating those already affected in a controlled environment.
