Euroleague club president comments on P. Motiejūnas: 'The league needs clubs like CSKA'

Ostoja Mijailović, president of Belgrade's Partizan, criticizes the Euroleague's recent scheduling decision that affected their match against Virtus Bologna.

Ostoja Mijailović, the president of the Euroleague basketball club Partizan from Belgrade, expressed his frustrations during an interview with Serbia's 'Meridian Sport,' specifically targeting the Euroleague for its recent scheduling changes. The match between Partizan and Virtus Bologna, initially set for March 12, was moved up to March 11 due to anticipated safety concerns arising from a concurrent football match involving Bologna and AS Roma. Mijailović argued that this decision violates the league's own regulations, which stipulate that such changes cannot occur without the consent of the affected teams.

The president voiced strong objections to the Euroleague's justification centered around safety, stressing that the decision disregarded the significant inconveniences posed to fans who planned for the event. He pointed out that several members of their board had to cancel their travel arrangements as a result of this abrupt change. Mijailović questioned the integrity of the Euroleague's governance if its bylaws were not respected, suggesting a lack of accountability from the league's administration and presenting a broader issue regarding how clubs are treated within the system.

Despite these challenges, Mijailović affirmed that Partizan would still participate in the relocated match, indicating their resilience in the face of such administrative hurdles. His comments highlight a growing discontent among clubs regarding the management of the Euroleague and reflect deeper issues about fairness and the treatment of clubs outside major markets, such as CSKA Moscow. This situation raises questions about the equitable treatment of all participating clubs, particularly those in smaller markets who may feel overshadowed by bigger franchises.
