'Fit and healthy' girl, 14, dies days after suffering 'tummy ache' as warning issued

A health warning has been issued following the death of 14-year-old Maisie Almond from Manchester, who tragically died after suffering from acute liver failure that developed from what began as a tummy ache.

Maisie Almond, a seemingly 'fit and healthy' 14-year-old girl from Manchester, experienced severe health issues stemming from persistent tummy pain that escalated rapidly. Following her initial complaints of pain, which grew increasingly urgent, her concerned parents took her to Tameside Hospital's emergency department. It was here that medical professionals discovered she had jaundice, indicating a critical condition involving acute liver failure.

As Maisie's health deteriorated, she was prioritized for a liver transplant and moved to the Children's Intensive Care ward at Leeds General Infirmary. On October 1, a suitable donor was identified, and preparations began for lifesaving surgery. Unfortunately, despite being on the top of the donor list, her condition worsened unexpectedly, leaving her too weak to proceed with the surgery scheduled for the following day, leading to her tragic passing.

Following the inquest into Maisie's death, a coroner emphasized the need for improved awareness of the symptoms associated with liver issues in young individuals. This tragic case highlights the importance of recognizing seemingly minor symptoms that could mask more serious underlying health crises, especially in children and teenagers, urging parents and guardians to seek immediate medical attention when unusual symptoms arise.
