Microsoft revealed 'Project Helix' – this is what we know now
Microsoft has confirmed that its next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, is in development and promises high-end power.
Microsoft's upcoming next-generation console, internally referred to as Project Helix, has been officially confirmed by Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Xbox. She states that the console will deliver top-tier performance and will be able to run both Xbox and PC games. Though detailed specifications have yet to be disclosed, further revelations about the console are expected soon, especially as Xbox participates in this week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) where announcements about gaming technology are typically made.
According to reports from Windows Central, the new Xbox is essentially a gaming PC, which will allow users to access not only Microsoft services but also games from platforms like Steam and Epic Games. This broad compatibility reflects a shift in Microsoft’s strategy to enhance user experience by integrating multiple gaming ecosystems. The console will feature a console-like interface known as Xbox Full Screen Experience, based on the design of the Xbox Ally handheld console, which aims to provide a seamless and visually appealing user environment.
In a move to ensure that the new Xbox maintains its gaming console identity, Microsoft is reportedly working continuously on making the interface as console-like as possible. While transitioning to a traditional Windows view is possible, it will remain an optional feature. This development comes at a crucial time for Microsoft, as they aim to strengthen their foothold in the gaming industry amidst growing competition from other gaming platforms and technology providers.
