Ufopa joins the 'Red Bank' campaign to combat femicide in Santarém
The Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa) has joined the 'Red Bank' campaign, a national initiative aimed at raising awareness about violence against women through painted red benches in public spaces.
The Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa) has officially joined the 'Red Bank' campaign, which is a national initiative designed to raise awareness about gender-based violence, particularly femicide. The campaign utilizes red-painted benches in public spaces as symbols to provoke reflection on violence against women and encourages reporting and prevention efforts. The initiative was launched at Ufopa's Santarém campus and is expected to expand to additional campuses.
The campaign was discussed earlier this year during a meeting of the Plenary Council of Rectors of the National Association of Directors of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Andifes), highlighting its importance within the academic community. The initiative is coordinated by the Red Bank Institute, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness and combating violence against women. This emphasis on institutional support underlines the growing recognition of the role that educational institutions play in addressing social issues.
Furthermore, the launch of the 'Red Bank' campaign aligns with the recent approval of Federal Law No. 14,942/2024, which officially established the Red Bank as a public policy for the prevention of femicide. This legal backing represents a significant step in implementing concrete measures against gender-based violence, showing the commitment at both the university and national levels to tackle this pressing issue.
