EU diplomacy chief calls for ceasefire in Lebanon

Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, has urged Hezbollah to cease all actions against Israel and criticized Israel's responses which have led to major disruptions in Lebanon.

Following discussions with Middle Eastern leaders, including Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Kaja Kallas, the head of EU foreign policy, called on the pro-Iranian group Hezbollah to cease all actions against Israel. She emphasized the right of Israel to defend itself but also criticized the Israeli response, stating that it has caused mass displacement of the population and further destabilized the fragile situation in Lebanon. Kallas warned that continued Israeli operations risk dragging Lebanon and its people into a war that does not involve them, with serious humanitarian implications.

Kallas's statements come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly after Hezbollah’s fighters attacked Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during US and Israeli strikes. This recent assault has pulled Lebanon directly into the ongoing conflict. In her remarks, Kallas stressed that diplomacy and a return to a ceasefire are the best means to prevent Lebanon from slipping into chaos, indicating the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.

The calls for cessation of hostilities reflect growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where the civilian population is being profoundly affected by the conflict. As the situation deteriorates, the international community is increasingly urged to intervene and seek a resolution to prevent further escalation in hostilities, which poses a threat not just to Lebanon, but to regional stability as a whole.
