New Unity suggests fully stopping economic ties with Russia by the end of the year

The Prime Minister of Latvia plans to develop a strategy to cease economic relations with Russia as part of a coalition agreement.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has announced a directive to various ministries to formulate a plan for completely halting economic relations with Russia by the end of 2026. The proposal outlines that ministries must assess how to maximally limit trade with Russia, although challenges arise due to Latvia's commitments as a part of the European market. Coalition partners are in agreement about the necessity to end trade relations with Russia, which has been a recurrent topic among the coalition parties.

This initiative aims to cease all imports and exports with Russia, with the Prime Minister specifically instructing ministries to develop a comprehensive analysis and plan by the end of March. Key areas of focus include the cessation of public transport routes to Russia, along with introducing a retail ban on Russian-origin goods in Latvia. Furthermore, the Ministry of Transport is tasked with preparing a detailed analysis concerning the flow of railway freight to and from Russia, as well as finding solutions to halt such operations.

These developments reflect a growing sentiment within Latvia, as it seeks to align its economic policies with broader European Union sanctions against Russia following geopolitical tensions. The full implementation of the proposed measures could significantly impact Latvia's economy and its business relations, pushing local enterprises to adapt to the changing international landscape.
