Firefighters say that the structure of the warehouse that caught fire is completely compromised

Firefighters in Rio de Janeiro report that a warehouse fire at the Motocriss company has severely compromised the building's structure, posing challenges for firefighting efforts.

In Rio de Janeiro, Colonel Luciano Sarmento, who leads the firefighting operations at the Motocriss company's warehouse on Rua Bitencourt Sampaio, confirmed that the structure is completely compromised after a fire broke out on the morning of November 9. Shortly after 7 AM, the fire intensified, threatening nearby buildings and causing part of the warehouse structure to collapse, scattering debris onto adjacent properties. The situation called for cautious firefighting approaches as the integrity of the building diminished rapidly.

Sarmento reported that the main challenges faced by firefighters included accessing the flames due to the precarious structure, which has collapsed in sections. He highlighted the presence of highly flammable materials such as tires and oils within the warehouse that contributed to the persistence and intensity of the flames. Though the fire has been brought under control, it has not yet reached the 'mopping up' phase, and crews are still on-site monitoring the situation for flare-ups.

Fire crews have been actively working to suppress the fire but had to retreat as the building’s integrity worsened, and the fire grew more intense. While authorities have assured that the risk of fire spreading further is contained, the ongoing assessments and efforts reflect the complexities of managing such industrial fires amidst significant structural risks.
