Engineering student Ayaan detained for spreading terrorist ideology through Telegram group
An engineering student named Ayaan Sheikh has been arrested by Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad for allegedly promoting the ideology of banned organizations via a Telegram group.
Ayaan Sheikh, an engineering student, has been taken into custody by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was presented in court for the second time on Monday, where the ATS sought an eight-day remand to further investigate his connections and activities. The agency claims that Ayaan was an active member of a Telegram group named "Islamic Politics," which has been under surveillance for promoting the ideologies of banned organizations. They contended that Ayaan played a significant role in propagating this ideology and reaching out to others through the platform.
The ATS provided evidence during the court hearing that identified the Telegram group as a hub for posts advocating disallowed ideologies. It was shared that Ayaan was not only a member but was actively engaging with the content by liking posts and tagging other users to encourage their viewership. Authorities are concerned that such online activities potentially contribute to a broader network of extremist propaganda, necessitating a deeper investigation into his online engagements and any connections to larger terror networks.
The arrest highlights ongoing concerns regarding the role of social media in facilitating the spread of radical ideas among young students in India. The ATS’s actions are part of a wider effort to combat the influence of extremist ideologies in the digital age. By targeting platforms like Telegram, the agency is addressing how these groups utilize technology to recruit and radicalize individuals, raising questions about digital safety and the measures needed to curb such online activities.
