Body of a drowning victim found in Marijampolė - experts and police investigators have taken action

The body of a man was found in the Šešupė River in Marijampolė, leading to an investigation by the police and forensic experts.

On March 9, a report was received by the Marijampolė County Police that a body was floating in the Šešupė River near a dam. Upon arrival, police found that firefighters had already retrieved the body to the shore. Authorities quickly identified the deceased as a man born in 1961. Notably, a local resident contacted the police claiming to be the dead man's friend and reported that he had not been in contact with the individual for the past four months.

Despite the friend's assertion that the man had been missing since November, nobody had previously reported him missing to the police, and no search had been conducted. It seems the body had been in the water for some time, although initial assessments suggest it was not four months. Following a preliminary examination, no visible signs of violence were noted on the body, prompting the initiation of a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of death.

The body has been handed over to forensic experts who will provide further insights into the circumstances surrounding the death. This incident has raised questions about the lack of prior missing person reports and emphasizes the need for community awareness regarding missing individuals, especially in cases where people may be unaccounted for over extended periods.
