Security Risk Observed at Olkiluoto
A security risk affecting safety was detected at the Olkiluoto 3 power plant, according to Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Stuk).
At the Olkiluoto 3 facility, significant security deficiencies were identified that could impact safety, as reported by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Stuk) and the power plant's operator, Teollisuuden Voima (TVO). On March 5, issues were discovered regarding plans and protocols designed to manage potential electrical system disturbances. This revelation arose during a safety analysis conducted by TVO, indicating that a possible power outage could hinder the functionality of certain cooling equipment related to the reactors.
Despite the identified issues, electricity generation continued without interruption. In response to the security risk, TVO has implemented immediate corrective measures. One of these actions included clarifying specific guidance to operators, as detailed by TVO's communications manager, Johanna Aho, in an interview with Ilta-Sanomat. The proactive approach demonstrates an emphasis on maintaining operational integrity and safety protocols amidst emerging risks.
The safety event was classified as level 1 on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), where classes 4 to 7 represent accidents, classes 1 to 3 denote safety-infringing events, and class 0 is for operational anomalies. This classification reflects the seriousness of the issues found, while also highlighting the plant's ongoing commitment to addressing safety concerns effectively.
