A bomb thrown at an anti-Islam demonstration in New York
A makeshift bomb was thrown during an anti-Islam demonstration in New York, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
A demonstration against Islam in New York City on Saturday turned violent when a makeshift bomb was thrown into the crowd. According to initial police investigations, the incident occurred during an event organized by far-right activist Jake Lang, titled 'Don’t Let Islam Take Over New York!', held outside the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani in Manhattan. While the protest had a modest turnout, it attracted a larger group of counter-protesters, one of whom threw a smoking device containing nuts, bolts, and a wick into the assembly.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported on social media that experts determined the thrown device was indeed an 'improvised explosive device' that could have caused serious injury or even death. The device was extinguished near the police officers present at the protest, underscoring the dangers involved. Following the incident, the person who threw the first device reportedly obtained a second device that was thrown but failed to ignite.
In the aftermath, two individuals have been detained in connection with the incident, and charges are expected to be brought against them. This alarming event not only raises concerns about safety at public demonstrations but also emphasizes the ongoing tensions surrounding anti-Islam sentiments in the U.S., particularly in New York, a city known for its diversity and tolerance towards various cultures and religions.
