Meteo: One of the rainiest winters in recent decades in Greece, winter 2025-2026

The winter of 2025-2026 in Greece has been marked by increased rainfall, especially in western regions and along the Pindus mountain range.

Greece's winter of 2025-2026 has been characterized by significant rainfall levels, as reported by data from the automated weather station network of meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens. This winter has proven to be one of the rainiest in recent decades, with the heaviest rainfall recorded in the western part of the country and along the Pindus mountain range.

Notably, the weather station in Theodorianas of Arta recorded the highest total rainfall of 1,580 mm, followed closely by the stations in Megalochari of Arta (1,367 mm), Zoitiko of Ioannina (1,338 mm), and Samaria-Xyloskalo of Chania (1,269 mm). In contrast, areas in eastern and southern Greece, as well as some parts of the Aegean, experienced lower amounts of rainfall, highlighting a regional disparity in weather patterns.

Overall, six weather stations reported more than 1,200 mm of rain, while 40 stations saw totals exceeding 800 mm during the winter months. These statistics underline the exceptional nature of this winter's weather and may prompt discussions about changing climate patterns and their impact on Greece's environment and water resources.
