Rain of nearly 80 mm causes flooding and drags motorcycle on avenues of Bauru
In Bauru, Brazil, heavy rainfall of 78 mm led to significant flooding, causing road blockages and one motorcycle to be swept away.
The city of Bauru in São Paulo state experienced severe rainfall, accumulating a total of 78 mm within just 12 hours, according to reports from the Civil Defense. This downpour occurred between the night of Sunday the 8th and Monday morning the 9th, resulting in numerous flooding incidents across the city, rendering multiple streets impassable. Critical areas affected include the Nações Unidas, Comendador José da Silva Martha, and Rodrigues Alves avenues, particularly near the viaduct of the Marechal Rondon Highway.
One notable incident involved a motorcyclist who attempted to cross a flooded section on Avenida Nações Unidas, only to have his motorcycle swept away by the powerful currents. Fortunately, although he struggled to maintain control of his vehicle, he did not sustain any injuries and was subsequently assisted by nearby pedestrians. The sight of a motorcycle getting dragged by the flood underscored the extent of the flooding and the dangers posed to motorists during such severe weather events.
In addition to the motorcyclist's experience, there were reports of serious infrastructural damages, including the opening of a large crater in the asphalt on Rua Rui Barbosa, specifically in the Jardim Bela Vista area. Local authorities have already deployed cleaning crews to address the aftermath of the flooding and to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. The situation serves as a reminder of the impact heavy rains can have on urban infrastructure and the importance of preparedness against such natural events.
