Petteri Orpo embarks on a journey that no prime minister has undertaken before

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is set to attend the Milano-Cortina Paralympics, marking him as the first Finnish prime minister to do so.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is making history by becoming the first Finnish leader to attend the Winter Paralympics in person. He will be traveling to Italy to support the Finnish team at the Milano-Cortina Paralympics, which is set to feature competitions with 665 athletes from over 50 countries. Orpo expressed the significance of his attendance, emphasizing the importance of encouraging Finnish athletes in both the Paralympics and the Olympics. His involvement is part of a broader commitment by the Finnish government to promote inclusivity and support for athletes with disabilities.

During his visit, Orpo plans to attend events including skiing and alpine competitions, where the Finnish team will be represented by four athletes: two alpine skiers, a snowboarder, and a cross-country skier, alongside a guide for the visually impaired skier. This participation symbolizes a growing recognition of athletes with disabilities and their achievements on a global stage, as the Paralympics continue to gain visibility and support from national leaders.

Orpo's participation in the Paralympics aligns with his previous commitment to actively participate in Olympic events and showcases a shift in governmental support towards adaptive sports. By supporting these events, Orpo aims to not only cheer for the Finnish athletes but also to send a message about the importance of sports as a unifying factor in society, as well as to inspire a new generation to appreciate the achievements of athletes regardless of their physical capabilities.
