Murder of female nursery teacher, 25 years imprisonment requested for acquaintance; son says 'Bring back mom'

Prosecutors have requested a 25-year prison sentence for a man accused of killing a nursery teacher in Japan, while her son expresses his grief during the trial.

In a tragic case in Iwanuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, a 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of 35-year-old nursery teacher Yuka Yoshizumi. The crime, which occurred in April of last year, led to a request from the prosecution for a 25-year prison term for the defendant, Renma Sato, who is accused of not only murdering Yoshizumi but also of abandoning her body. The prosecution argued that Sato utilized Yoshizumi's vulnerable situation as a single mother for his own benefit and that he resorted to murder when pressured regarding marriage and child support. During the trial, it was revealed that Sato claimed he was provoked into the act due to threats from Yoshizumi, who stated that he would not be able to pursue his kickboxing career. However, this reasoning was heavily criticized in court, highlighting the disparity between the defendant's concerns and the value of human life. Evidence presented in the form of search histories indicated the killing was premeditated, with the prosecution asserting that Sato had intended to steal Yoshizumi's belongings as well. Adding to the emotional weight of the trial, family members of the victim, including her son, were present in court, expressing their deep sorrow and demanding justice. Yoshizumi's eight-year-old son delivered a heartfelt letter pleading for his mother to be returned to him, asking why she had to be hurt and conveying his love for her. In a moment of remorse, Sato expressed his sorrow for taking the life of Yoshizumi, acknowledging that no actions could justify his crime and pleading for forgiveness from the grieving family, particularly from the victim's son.
