Investigation: Telegram Is the Main Channel for the Kremlin's Narrative Distribution

An investigation highlights Telegram as a primary platform for pro-Russian messaging, while also pointing to Facebook as a source of emotional polarization, particularly affecting the youth.

A recent investigation has revealed that Telegram has emerged as the main channel for distributing Kremlin narratives, with over 54% of analyzed posts being pro-Russian and nearly 44% being anti-Ukrainian. This data highlights the significant role that social media plays in shaping public opinion and spreading disinformation, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The findings also raise concerns about the impact of such content on society, particularly on younger generations who are increasingly turning to these platforms for news.

The study emphasizes the vulnerability of the younger population, indicating that almost half of Lithuania's residents are exposed to disinformation, with young people being particularly susceptible due to their heavy reliance on social media for news sources. LRTK chair Mantas Martišius pointed out during a press conference that while traditional media may not be a significant carrier of Russian disinformation, the younger generation is becoming more inclined to seek information through social networks, which can exacerbate identity conflicts and group polarization.

Moreover, the investigation suggests that Facebook, despite being a different platform, has become an engine of emotional polarization among its users, contributing to identity-based conflicts and societal divides. The implications of this are substantial, indicating a need for better education about media literacy and the importance of verifying sources, especially for the youth who are at higher risk of falling victim to manipulative narratives and disinformation campaigns.
