SM League reigning champion: terrible news
KalPa announced that their primary goalkeeper, Stefanos Lekkas, will miss the remainder of the season due to an injury requiring surgery.
KalPa, the defending champion of the Finnish Ice Hockey League (SM-liiga), has received devastating news regarding their primary goaltender, Stefanos Lekkas. The team announced on Monday that Lekkas, who sustained an injury a month ago, will require surgery, effectively ending his season. Anssi Laine, KalPa's sports director, confirmed in a statement that the injury had worsened during the rehabilitation process, resulting in the need for an operation.
Lekkas was a key player in securing KalPa’s championship last spring, making his absence a significant blow as the team prepares for the upcoming playoffs. With the regular transfer window already closed, KalPa will have to rely on a new goaltending duo for the postseason: Talyn Boyko and Patrik Kerkola. Boyko, a tall Canadian player, has only played 13 games in the league thus far, leaving many uncertainties about KalPa's chances in the playoffs without their star goalie.
KalPa has three regular season games remaining before entering the playoffs, where they currently hold the sixth position in the league standings. The team must quickly adapt to this unexpected situation, as the playoffs require peak performance, and the absence of a standout goaltender could jeopardize their title defense.
