Detention of alleged child rapist extended

The detention of an alleged child rapist in Hafnarfjörður has been extended until April 3, 2026.

Helgi Bjartur Þorvarðsson, accused of raping a ten-year-old boy in Hafnarfjörður, is undergoing extended detention, which will last until April 3, 2026. This extension comes as the main proceedings in his case are set to begin in two weeks. The 31-year-old has faced multiple charges, including sexual offenses and later prostitution-related charges after an initial accusation in January.

In January, Helgi was charged with rape, but his detention was initially denied by the Reykjanes District Court. However, the case was appealed to the Landsréttur (High Court of Iceland), which reversed the decision, ordering a four-week detention on January 14. Following this, the detention has been renewed twice, with the latest confirmation occurring at the end of February.

The continuation of his detention reinforces the serious nature of the charges against him, particularly the gravity of committing sexual offenses against a minor. As the case develops and heads into the main hearing, it raises significant concerns regarding child protection and justice for victims of sexual crimes in Iceland, reflecting the broader societal implications surrounding such offenses.
