Pursuit of car theft gang acting in the Center and South Zone of Rio ends with two dead and two arrested
A police chase in Rio de Janeiro resulted in the deaths of two suspected criminals and the arrest of two others, as they were part of a gang involved in car thefts.
In a dramatic late-night police operation, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) pursued a gang specialized in car thefts in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, culminating in a shootout that left two gang members dead and two apprehended in Catumbi, North Zone. The confrontation began as law enforcement officers implemented a pre-established strategy following the gang's activities that had been under surveillance due to their connection with a string of vehicle thefts in the area.
The police initiated the chase on Frei Caneca Street, located in the city center, which escalated when the suspects violently reacted. The gang, known for its use of stolen vehicles in previous crimes, attempted to evade capture, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the police. Law enforcement managed to capture two members of the gang, while two others were fatally wounded during the confrontation, highlighting the dangers faced by police in urban crime operations.
Authorities recovered two pistols and a revolver from the scene, intensifying the investigation into the gang's activities and their methods of operation. The dead suspects' bodies were transported to the Medical-Legal Institute, and this incident emphasizes ongoing police efforts to dismantle organized crime in Rio's urban landscape, particularly the prominent issue of car thefts that have increasingly plagued the city's inhabitants in recent years.
