Stoltenberg: It is wrong to believe that Norway will benefit from the war
Jens Stoltenberg cautions that it is a mistake to believe Norway will gain economically from the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and warns of the unpredictable impact on global economic conditions.
During a recent press conference, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, emphasized that it is mistaken to think that Norway could economically benefit from the current conflicts in the Middle East. He noted that while Norway, rich in oil and gas resources, may have experienced financial gains in previous conflicts, the ongoing situation creates uncertainty in the global economy. Stoltenberg's comments come as the Norwegian government prepares for its budget conference while grappling with multiple international crises.
Stoltenberg highlighted the challenges the government faces in forecasting Norway's economic future due to various global conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and trade disputes between the United States and other nations. He reiterated that the current geopolitical landscape is indeed more precarious now than it was a year ago, suggesting that the complications introduced by these conflicts could adversely affect Norway's economic stability. He urged caution and a realistic assessment of the situation rather than optimistic expectations of economic gain.
In his remarks, Stoltenberg indicated that the previous assumption where conflicts might drive economic prosperity for oil and gas-rich countries like Norway is increasingly doubtful. He stressed the need for a strategic approach in response to these evolving challenges in the global economic framework, as unanticipated outcomes are likely to emerge from ongoing wars and disputes, thereby impacting budgets and economic forecasts.
