Kenya evacuates tourists as death toll from flooding rises

Kenya has evacuated tourists from the Maasai Mara National Reserve due to severe flooding that has resulted in at least 42 deaths, predominantly in Nairobi.

In response to significant flooding in Kenya, particularly severe in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, both tourists and staff were airlifted from the area as floodwaters rose. The Mara River and Talek River overflowed, leading to an evacuation of camps before the heaviest rainfall. The CEO of the Mara Elephant Project Trust reported that many had already left the camps before the downpour worsened, showcasing preparedness in response to rising water levels.

Local authorities are managing ongoing search and rescue operations, as the death toll from the flooding is tragically high. At least 42 fatalities have been reported, mainly in Nairobi, where many died from drowning or electrocution during the storm. Police Chief George Seda indicated that the number of casualties might increase as rescue efforts continue, reflecting the severe impact the flooding has had on urban areas.

The heavy rains, which started on Friday and continued into the subsequent days, submerged vehicles and disrupted normal life in various regions. The situation raises concerns not only for tourists but also for local communities who are now facing challenges related to safety, infrastructure damage, and potential long-term recovery from this environmental crisis.
