Chios: 99,000 citizens participated in Chios Climate Chance

The Chios Climate Chance program demonstrated an effective social mobilization model against climate change, involving over 99,000 citizens.

The Chios Climate Chance (CCC) initiative concluded a two-year cycle on the Greek island of Chios, presenting an innovative model for social mobilization to combat climate change. Through this program, a total of 99,307 citizens engaged in over 150 awareness and educational activities spread across schools, villages, public squares, beaches, local festivals, and even municipal buses. The initiative was not only aimed at raising awareness but also at encouraging community involvement in climate action.

According to HELMEPA's president, Semiramis Paliou, the program has successfully trained 8,694 'Climate Ambassadors' ranging in age from 4 to 96 years old, emphasizing the broad demographic engagement in this crucial issue. The diverse activities aimed to elevate the dialogue surrounding climate change on the island, thereby fostering a community that is better equipped to respond to environmental challenges.

Impressively, 96% of participants reported making at least one daily habit change towards more sustainable practices as a result of their participation. The initiative was co-funded by the Maria Tsakos Public Benefit Foundation and the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, showcasing collaboration between local organizations to enhance citizens' understanding and actions regarding climate issues. The significant turnout and engagement reflect the island's commitment to sustainable development and the potential for replicating this model nationally and beyond.
