Youth Candidates Hardly Seen in Preliminary Nominations for Local Heads
Ahead of the June 3 local elections in South Korea, there is a notable absence of young candidates among those registering for local chief positions despite political calls for increased youth representation.
In the lead-up to the June 3 local elections in South Korea, preliminary candidate registrations for local chief positions reveal a concerning trend: the lack of young candidates. While the political discourse emphasizes the importance of expanding youth involvement in politics, the statistical reality shows that the majority of candidates remain from the older demographic. According to data from the National Election Commission, out of 124 preliminary candidates for city and county heads in Gyeonggi Province, only six candidates are aged 40 or younger, with just one individual in their 30s, Jeong Jin-ho, who is contesting for the mayoralty of Uijeongbu. This scarcity is reflected across the Seoul metropolitan area as well, where youth representation remains minimal in the candidate lists.
