Russia attacks Ukraine with ballistic missiles and 197 drones: air defences intercept over 160 UAVs, hits recorded
Russia launched an extensive attack on Ukraine using ballistic missiles and drones, with Ukrainian forces successfully intercepting a majority of the aerial threats.
On the night of March 8-9, Russian military forces executed a significant assault on Ukraine, employing two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 197 drones, including a large quantity of Shahed loitering munitions. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that approximately 120 of the UAVs deployed were of the Shahed model. Early assessments confirmed that Ukrainian air defense systems had successfully destroyed or jammed 161 drones by morning, demonstrating a robust defensive response against the aerial onslaught.
Despite the successes in intercepting the majority of the UAVs, Russian forces managed to achieve some hits; specifically, they reported successful strikes from the two missiles and 36 drones across eight locations in the country, highlighting the ongoing nature of the threat. The Ukrainian military deployed various assets including aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, and electronic warfare systems to counter the attack effectively. Nevertheless, the presence of several more Russian drones in Ukrainian airspace at the time of reporting indicated that the assault was not fully contained.
This attack underscores the persistent challenges faced by Ukraine's air defense systems amidst ongoing hostilities. As the situation continues to evolve, the implications for the regional security landscape are significant, necessitating ongoing vigilance and readiness from Ukrainian defense forces to address such complex threats.
