Artists and Scientists Gather for the Future of Their Fields
Finnish researchers and artists convene to discuss the state of their fields and advocate for their importance.
In Finland, a series of discussions entitled 'Science & Art' has been launched by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, bringing together researchers and artists to address the current state and future of their respective fields. The first meeting is taking place in Vantaa followed by further discussions in Kokkola and Lappeenranta. The initiative aims to respond to the recent cuts and negative attitudes towards science and the arts, advocating for a renewed appreciation of their significance in society.
Johanna Ruohonen, the director of development at the Finnish Cultural Foundation, has expressed the need for these discussions to act as a precursor to more extensive dialogues about the value of science and art. She notes the growing perception of hostility or indifferent attitudes towards both fields and emphasizes the importance of highlighting their contributions to everyday life. The discussions intend to pave the way for continuing conversations about improving support for both sectors.
Additionally, the spring gatherings will feature screenings of the newly completed documentary film 'The Secret Reading Club of Kabul,' directed by Shakiba Adil and Elina Hirvonen. The film focuses on women's secret resistance and hope in Afghanistan, illustrating the critical relevance of art and narratives in informing and shaping public consciousness, particularly concerning gender issues.
