Šufánek, Mixer or Pajzak. An Exhibition at the Academy of Sciences Highlights Disappearing Dialects
An exhibition at the Academy of Sciences in Czechia showcases endangered dialects, featuring quizzes and interactive elements for visitors.
The exhibition titled "Critically Endangered Phenomena of Our Dialects" opens to the public on March 4, 2026, and engages visitors in exploring various dialect words and their meanings. One of the quirky quiz questions challenges attendees to identify the meaning of the word 'cibéba', which can refer to onion, raisin, or finch, highlighting the richness of local dialects. The organizers have designed the exhibit to be highly interactive, encouraging participation through questionnaires and contributions to a large map indicating regional dialect expressions.
Visitors are drawn in by large-format dialect maps and an audio corner featuring authentic voices from different regions. The exhibit is backed by extensive audio recordings collected during the first comprehensive dialect research conducted fifty years ago. These recordings, which feature responses from the oldest generation often born in the second half of the 20th century, offer a valuable insight into the evolution of dialects over time and the importance of preserving these linguistic treasures.
By offering a mixture of visual and auditory experiences, the exhibition aims not only to educate the public about the significance of dialects in cultural identity but also seeks to spark a dialogue about their preservation. As many dialects face the threat of extinction, events like these are crucial in raising awareness and fostering appreciation for the linguistic diversity present within Czechia’s regions.
