Palmeiras has won its 27th title in the São Paulo Championship, defeating Novorizontino.
On Sunday, Palmeiras secured their 27th championship title in the São Paulo Championship by overcoming Novorizontino in the final match. This victory reinforces Palmeiras' position as the second most successful club in the state's history, trailing only behind Corinthians, which holds 31 titles. Following them are São Paulo and Santos, each with 22 championships.
The São Paulo Championship, known as the first state football tournament in Brazil, has been held continuously since 1902, showcasing its longstanding tradition. The origins of the tournament can be traced back to December 1901 when five clubs from the capital — Sport Club Internacional, Club Athletico Paulistano, Sport Club Germânia, Associação Athletica Mackenzie College, and São Paulo Athletic Club, led by Charles Miller — founded the Liga Paulista de Foot-ball to organize the inaugural season of the competition the following year.
The tournament's history witnessed significant changes, including a split in 1912 that resulted in the formation of the Associação Paulista de Esportes Atléticos, which led to competing leagues each hosting their own events until the original Liga Paulista de Foot-ball ceased in 1917. The legacy of the São Paulo Championship reflects the evolution of Brazilian football, marking it as a cornerstone of the sport in the country, connecting generations of fans and players alike.
