Women’s Mobilizations Took Place in Esmeraldas and Napo this Sunday March 8
On March 8, 2023, International Women's Day, women’s groups in Esmeraldas and Napo held mobilizations advocating for gender equality and women’s rights.
In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, women’s collectives from Esmeraldas and Sucumbíos provinces organized mobilizations to raise awareness for women’s rights. In Esmeraldas City, the group 'Mujeres por el Cambio' held a concentration and march through the city center, attended by about 40 women who carried posters advocating for respect for rights and gender equality. This public display aimed to draw attention to the ongoing struggles for women’s rights in the region.
As a part of their demonstration, participants painted a commemorative mural on the outer wall of a local educational institution in Esmeraldas. This mural serves as a lasting reminder for the community to reflect on the various demands of feminist groups. The event signifies not just a celebration but also a call to action for society to consider and address these important issues concerning gender equality and women's rights.
In Muisne, additional activities are planned to continue the celebration beyond March 8, with a march, entrepreneurial stands, and artistic gatherings scheduled for March 9. Meanwhile, another protest took place in Napo, specifically in the El Socavón area, where participants also sought to highlight local issues exacerbated by environmental factors, such as erosion in the region. These mobilizations collectively illustrate the determination of women across different provinces to advocate for their rights and social justice while also addressing pressing local concerns.
